Welcome to our newsroom

Who we are: We're the organization that provides legal aid to people throughout BC. Established in 1979, the Legal Services Society is an independent but publicly funded and publicly accountable organization.

What we do: Every year, we help tens of thousands of BC residents who live on low incomes solve serious child protection, family, immigration, criminal, and some civil law problems. We also provide legal information and education services to the public and advocates throughout the province, and support lawyers who help legal aid clients.

Where we are: People can get our services over the phone through our toll-free LSS Call Centre; in person at a legal aid office or at most courthouses where we have duty counsel; or by visiting our websites.

When we help: We look at each person's legal problem and financial situation to decide how best we can help. Depending on the circumstances, we may offer legal information, advice, and/or representation by a lawyer.

Why legal aid: Access to justice is a cornerstone of a decent society. Legal aid plays an important role in the economic and social health of the whole community and is an investment in a secure and productive future.
