A recent report of the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch (CBABC), offers strong support for legal aid. Its Agenda for Justice - 2018 Platform Update contains a series of recommendations aimed at improving the BC justice system.
CBABC recognized the government’s recent funding increase to the Legal Services Society (LSS) but also proposed several justice and legislative reforms.
The organization suggested an increase in legal aid funding for family law issues and Indigenous services. As well, it urged a government review of the fee paid to legal aid lawyers to allow LSS to match rates in comparable jurisdictions and adequately cover the overhead costs of lawyers.
