October 27 is Duty Counsel Day, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the vital contributions of duty counsel lawyers to our justice system. These lawyers provide free legal advice and limited representation for some issues to people appearing in court without a lawyer. They assist in criminal, family, child protection and immigration cases, offering guidance and support to those who would not have access to representation otherwise.
“Duty counsel lawyers play a vital role in making sure no one is left behind in our justice system,” says Niki Sharma, Attorney General. “On Duty Counsel Day, we recognize their tireless work to ensure that underserved and marginalized British Columbians have fair and equal access to justice.”
Legal Aid BC (LABC) is deeply committed to advancing access to justice, and duty counsel are central to this mission. We are proud to acknowledge the duty counsel lawyers across the province who help break down barriers to the legal system, providing support to those who need it most.
“I have great respect and appreciation for the lawyers who dedicate themselves to this essential, and often challenging work,” adds Wendy Jackson, CEO of LABC. “Duty counsel provides critical support to people navigating the system alone, ensuring their voices are heard and their rights are protected.”
On this day, and every day, we thank duty counsel for their incredible dedication and commitment. Their efforts not only make a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve, but also strengthen our justice system as a whole.
