Today marks the 18th anniversary of Pink Shirt Day, an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness about bullying and cyberbullying. Across British Columbia, people are proudly wearing pink to demonstrate their commitment to anti-bullying efforts. This year’s theme, “Let Kindness Grow,” encourages us to cultivate a community of kindness and understanding.
Pink Shirt Day began in Nova Scotia when two students took a stand against bullying by encouraging their peers to wear pink. This simple act of solidarity sparked a global movement that continues to inspire positive change today.
Since then, the movement has expanded its focus to include broader themes of respect, acceptance, and the celebration of diversity and inclusion. In the spirit of Pink Shirt Day, Legal Aid BC would like to affirm its commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, particularly at a time when organizations are stepping back from the principles and values of DEI. LABC has invested and will continue to invest in initiatives and programs that advance Truth and Reconciliation, equity diversity and inclusion, and anti-racism.
By participating in Pink Shirt Day, we affirm our commitment to fostering supportive, inclusive environments where fairness and diverse perspectives thrive, as we work to embed the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion in everything that we do.
