Legal Aid BC celebrates Duty Counsel Day: A day to recognize our everyday legal heroes

October 27 is Duty Counsel Day, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the important work of duty counsel lawyers across Canada.

Initiated by Canada’s legal aid associations, this day highlights the vital legal support duty counsel provide to people facing court without a lawyer by their side. Each year, duty counsel assist thousands of people with family, criminal, and immigration matters, helping them understand their rights and make informed decisions.

Through their expertise, dedication, and compassion, duty counsel lawyers make a meaningful difference in the lives of people facing some of life’s most challenging circumstances. On Duty Counsel Day, we recognize their commitment to improving access to justice and ensuring people have the legal guidance they need when it matters most.

To mark the occasion, landmarks across the country will be illuminated in red to shine a light on the essential role duty counsel play within our justice system.

Here in BC, participating landmarks include the Parliament Buildings in Victoria, Vancouver City Hall, Burrard Street Bridge, BC Place, Science World, and the Convention Centre in Vancouver, and the Bastion in Nanaimo. We look forward to seeing these familiar landmarks shine red on October 27 as we recognize the impact of duty counsel lawyers throughout the province.
