Reaffirming our commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

As an organization rooted in the principle of access to justice, we believe it is essential to speak clearly and publicly: Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI), and Accessibility are not optional. These principles are vital to the integrity, fairness, and effectiveness of our work.

Our commitment to EDI and Accessibility is not a recent development. These principles are embedded in who we are, what we do, and how we work. We are reaffirming this commitment.

In light of the evolving social and political climate in Canada and the United States, which has sparked public discourse about the role and value of EDI in the workplace and public service, we are seeing some organizations scale back their EDI initiatives. Our strategic priority – to embed Truth and Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion throughout every aspect of Legal Aid BC (LABC) – is more critical than ever.

This commitment supports our mission to strengthen client-centred legal help for people living in British Columbia who face barriers to accessing the legal system. It advances our vision of a legal system that is transformed through equitable and inclusive representation of our clients. These values are essential to our role as a public service provider and foundational to the trust we build with communities across the province.

Looking ahead

LABC remains committed to advancing EDI and accessibility through strategic planning, policy development, community engagement, and systemic change.

We are steadfast in our commitment to EDI and accessibility because it is core to who we are and essential to the delivery of just, effective, and compassionate legal services in BC.
