In 2024, we opened two multidisciplinary Family Law Centres (FLCs) which provide services for survivors of family violence to help stabilize their legal and non-legal issues. These centres were developed collaboratively with government and the Centre for Family Equity (CFE) and have served over 350 clients since their launch, through in-person and virtual services.
We also introduced Family Legal Aid Expansion (FLAE) hours, an additional 25 General Preparation hours for eligible clients experiencing family violence who have a standard representation contract.
As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we have been evaluating these services on an ongoing basis. This includes engagement with CFE, and with FLC clients and staff through a formative evaluation process.
As a result of ongoing collaboration with CFE, starting in spring 2026, we will be introducing the following changes to our FLC and FLAE services:
- In-person FLC services at two new locations: We are transitioning from virtual services in Prince George and Kamloops to in-person services, with multidisciplinary teams located within existing Parents Legal Center (PLC) offices. We are currently in the process of hiring and onboarding staff for these new locations, targeting summer 2026 for their opening.
- Revised eligibility criteria: To be eligible for FLC or FLAE services, a client must be experiencing family violence and at least one additional eligible legal issue. As of June 22, 2026, the list of eligible legal issues will be revised to include parenting arrangements. The FLCs will provide services until they reach capacity, prioritizing clients who live in designated catchment areas and who have fled their abusive partner within the past six months. FLAE hours will be approved up to available budget on a first-come, first-served basis each month.
