Indigenous Justice Centres offer culturally appropriate information, advice, support, and representation for Indigenous people.
The evaluation suggests Gladue reports are a benefit to the justice system and that they can assist stakeholders to reduce the number of Aboriginal offenders in the prison system.
In addition, Aboriginal offenders who met with LABC-trained Gladue report writers said they experienced a higher level of trust than they did when meeting with a probation officer who would otherwise prepare the Gladue component of a pre-sentence report.
Although the evaluation demonstrates the value of the Gladue Report Pilot Project, LABC doesn’t have the funding to continue the program. Without new funding, we will only be able to fund reports in very limited circumstances. We will, however, continue to look for sustainable funding for them.
