When you call, an LABC staff member will ask you questions to determine your eligibility for our services. Please have all of your financial and court information handy when you phone. You’ll need to provide proof of your income and assets in some, but not all, situations.

Financial and court information

Proof of your income can include one or more of the following:

  • two recent pay stubs,
  • a recent welfare stub, or
  • a recent income tax return or bank records (if you’re self-employed or seasonally employed).

You’ll also need to provide:

  • proof of the value of your assets, and
  • any papers you have about your case — such as court orders or papers related to your criminal charge.

For more information, see How to apply.

If you have been approved for legal aid and you want to follow up on your representation contract, please contact the intake worker at the LABC location where you applied. You can contact the intake worker directly using the phone number or email address they gave you.

If you have to call long distance to reach a legal aid location, you can phone Service BC and ask them to put your call through for free.

If you are using a cell phone, the length of the call may still affect your bill.

Need help in another language?

Our services are provided in English. If you can’t communicate with our staff in English and can’t call with someone who can interpret for you, we can arrange for an interpreter.

When you phone the Call Centre, you will first hear a recorded legal aid welcome message. You can also access the recorded message in six languages:

  • Cantonese,
  • English,
  • French,
  • Mandarin,
  • Punjabi, and
  • Spanish.

The messages explain that if you need services in languages other than English, you should tell the staff person who answers what language you speak so they can arrange immediate access to a telephone interpreter. Interpreters are available for more than 100 languages.
