When you first apply for a lawyer vendor number at LABC, Form-A on this Forms web page asks you to provide your GST number. This is essential for us to set up your profile in our financial system. If you are with a law firm, please consult with them to determine if you will be using the firm’s GST number or if you’ll need your own. The firm should also be able to provide you with their WorkSafeBC number, if applicable. If you’re a sole practitioner, or a contractor, you may need your own GST number.
We enter your taxation status into our financial system and require your GST number to pay GST on your fees. While you can enter your GST number in the Lawyer Portal, it is important to notify us via email or Form C (PDF) so we can update your taxation status. Please note that not notifying us about a change to your tax information could result in issues with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) as well as administrative and financial burdens for LABC.
If you are changing firms, in most cases, you will need to change your GST number and possibly your taxation status. It is also important to update your banking information. To do that, fill out Form C (PDF). If you do not update your banking information, your payments will continue to be sent to the bank we have listed on file.
If your earnings are below the CRA’s income threshold, you may be exempt from paying GST. In this case, a GST number is not needed. However, it’s essential that you monitor your exemption status and update us as soon as it changes. For more information on GST rules, please refer to the CRA website.
