October is Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM), a time to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities in the workplace and promote inclusive, equitable hiring practices. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on how we can make our services more accessible and ensure people who experience disabilities feel supported in their interactions with us.
As part of this commitment, we’ve introduced assisted hearing devices in our offices to better support clients who are hard of hearing. In this video, a Legal Aid BC (LABC) staff lawyer with lived experience of hearing loss introduces the devices, explains how they work, and shares how they’re helping make our services more accessible for clients.
This initiative was championed by LABC’s Accessibility Committee, which recognized the importance of reducing communication barriers and ensuring clients who are hard of hearing can access our services comfortably and effectively. By introducing these devices, we aim to better meet clients’ needs and foster a more accessible and inclusive experience for those we serve.
